The Great American Road Trip–Part IV

ONWARD TO

GLACIER NATIONAL PARK

Or, Go North Young Man (with apologies to Horace Greely)

After a day leisurely driving past Lake Yellowstone and through Grand Teton National Park followed by a night in Jackson Hole, the decision was made to continue onward to Glacier National Park.

Lake Yellowstone

This was about my first view of the Tetons.  Despite the smoke from nearby forest fires, they were still spectacular.  Shortly after I found a spot for an unplanned day hike.

Leaving Jackson Hole the next morning, I stumbled upon yet another detour, the Mesa Falls Scenic Byway.  This loop added about three hours onto my trip but was well worth it.  The highlight was Upper Mesa Falls.

The bright green area under the ‘permanent’ rainbow is a micro climate with its own unique plants.

Well, a day and a half of serious driving should get me to Kalispell, Montana.  That’s almost to Canada and adjacent to Glacier National Park.  The weather is turning chilly up here already; however, the Highway to the Sun closes in three days and I would really like to make it across the park while I am still able.

…to be continued

I bet it was a little unsettling to see the smoke.

I knew it wasn’t too close, but could still feel it in my throat and lungs.
