HOKITIKA GEORGE

Glacial runoff from the Franz Josef Glacier created this beautiful gorge.  It is also really cold, but a quick swim was required.

SHEEP CROSSING

New Zealand has 4.4 million people and 38.5 million sheep!  The intensity of the green pastures and grasslands make for excellent grazing.  Driving back from Milford Sound I had to wait while a large herd was run down the highway to a new grazing area.

The Australian Collie, aka Sheepdog has had a fundamental role in the economic development of New Zealand.  In the Mackenzie Country, there is even a bronze  monument to the sheepdog.  Here two doggies doggedly do their work while the rancher follows along occasionally shouting out a command.
