Street Art in Cali, Colombia

I recently spent a day and a night in Cali, Colombia, on my way south to Ecuador.  Cali is Colombia’s third largest city with a population only slightly less than Medellin.  However, it was Holy Week and the town felt rather emptied out as the locals head to the beaches and mountain towns to vacation.

Cali is sometimes referred to as the salsa capital of Columbia.  It is also known as the plastic surgery capital of Latin America.  I spent my day taking in a student theatrical production, wandering into a food fair, and enjoying the bountiful street art.

I previously posted a story about the street art in El Salvador.  Cali’s pop art uses a different color palette and encompasses political as well as whimsical themes  Here are a few samples:

So, I could add Colombian Street Art Capital to Cali’s other reputations.  There were many more examples which spiced up an otherwise uneventful stay.  That night I boarded a 10 p.m. bus for the all night ride to Pasto near the Ecuadorian border.

By the time you read this, I will be en route to the Galapagos Islands, a place I have wanted to visit since primary school geography studies.
